[1] is known for its use of the [hashtag], used in order to categorize the user’s message or connect it to relative subjects. The hashtags become especially important for members of a group to post similar material to a wall that is connected by a common hashtag. Communication then, becomes easier when elements such as subject hashtags are employed and connections and visibility of posts are easily made among users.

Regarding writing for digital media especially, the use of hashtags are crucial to the connections of groups or likeminded users who wish to relate their thoughts to others. Since the writing on Twitter must be brief, hashtags assist in “summing up” quickly what has been relayed in the Tweet. This way, the user does not have to elaborate inside of the post, but can rely on the hashtag to classify the message. Specifically, because of hashtags, the engagement within a classroom setting of individuals using Twitter can be much more successful in order for students to communicate and convey ideas for the course to their peers.
