The comma was invented to help readers understand run ons and smushed together sentence parts.  Commas are essentially used to interupt the flow of a sentence.  The use of commas in logical places would clear up a lot of the problems that come along with the use or misuse of commas.  The most important rule to follow for using a comma is: use a comma only when you are sure you need it. More specifically, if you follow these eight rules, you will use commas correctly.
