Atmosphere

The emotional tone (for instance, joy, or horror) in a work, is most often established by the setting. The setting in a work usually provides the atmosphere. The atmosphere is "an air that the characters breathe, a world in which they move." The setting can be physical surroundings such as furniture, landscape, and climate. All of these props establish the atmosphere. (Literature for Composition, 114-115)
