Ethel Rosenberg

Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were executed in Sing Sing Prison on June 19, 1953. They had been convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage after giving information about the American atomic program to the Soviets during World War II. Though the government was convinced of their guilt, many people were not. The debate over their guilt or innocence did not stop with their deaths even though the declassification of government documents related to the case indicate that Julius Rosenberg did indeed spy for the Soviets. Once the Soviet Union collapsed, further documents were released which also confirmed Julius Rosenberg was involved in espionage. However, the government's case against Ethel Rosenberg was quite weak according to the same official papers. (CCNY Libraries reference and research)
