Conjunctive adverbs are averbs used to indicated the relation between independent clauses (Hacker 453). The ability to distinguish between conjunctive adverbs and coordinating conjunctions will help you avoid run-on sentences and make punctuation decisions. The purpose of conjunctive adverbs is to join clauses, phrases, or ideas. When joining two independent clauses, conjunctive adverbs are performing the same function as coordinating conjunctions; however, the rules of punctuation are different (Simmons 2013).
