A short fiction consists of a sequence of related events. Short stories include fables, sketches, and tales. A short story is any work of fiction that is shorter than a novel. Short story is the name of a specific literary genre. It usually refers to a short fiction which involves one unified episode. There are five elements to a short story: character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme. A short story is a short work of fiction. Fiction is writing about imagined events and characters. "A short-story deals with a single character, a single event, a single emotion, or the series of emotions called forth by a single situation.(Brander Matthews, The Philosophy of the Short-Story). Some short stories can be quite long. If a a short story is a long one we call it a novella. American literature contains some of the best examples of the short story. Some examples of short story writers are O. Henry, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe.
